GPAC Seniors Travel to Wisconsin for Sectionals

 

Braving early March temperatures and the possibility of snow, eight GPAC senior swimmers headed north to Wisconsin to compete in the Speedo Champions Series Sectional meet March 7-10.  Led by five top-8 swims by Brooke Ferrara, the girls’ team took fourth place overall, and the team placed seventh.

Ferrara, 15, was dominant in her sprint freestyle events, claiming second place in the 100-yd free, and third place in the 50-yd free.  Her 100-yd and 200-yd backstroke swims were good enough for seventh and eighth place, respectively.  She also nabbed an eighth place finish in the 200-yd freestyle.  Brooke, along with teammates Brianna Mount,17, Caroline Page, 17, and Olivia Weekley, 16, captured third place in the 400-yd freestyle relay.  GPAC’s400-yd medley  relay of Ferrara, Page, Weekley and Tatiana Oberley, 15, set a new team record and took fourth place at the meet.

Several other GPAC women finished in the top-16 at the meet.  Brianna Mount placed fifth in the 100-yd freestyle and 10th in the 100-yd freestyle.  Caroline Page placed 10th in the 100-yd backstroke, 13th in the 200-yd backstroke and 15th in the 100-yd butterfly.  Olivia Weekley placed fourth in the 100-yd butterfly, seventh in the 200-yd fly and 14th in the 50-yd free.

On the men’s side, Nate Thomas, 17, was GPAC’s big point scorer.  He had four top-8 finishes (4th-50 Fr, 7th- 100 Fr, 8th- 100 and 200 fly) and a ninth place finish in the 100-yd breaststroke.  Steffen Mount, 15, posted two life-best times at the meet and had four top-16 finishes (12th-100 Fr, 13th- 200 Fr, 15th- 100 Bk, 16th- 100 Fly).  Jack Tona competed in four events while in Wisconsin finishing as high as 21st in the 200 IM.
